Upgrades to an item are a way to boost the stats of an item. Depending on the type of upgrade, it can increase the rarity of an item or mark Level and increase other stats.

However, it does not directly affect damage or ability to upgrade items. It gives players an opportunity to get better gear earlier in the game. This is particularly advantageous in the early game, since players tend to prioritize the scaling of weapons and defenses over raw damage gains.
Luck can also increase the likelihood of upgrading items at the Blacksmith. This is not to confuse with the Blacksmith's overall upgrade chances that increase with each item level. They can also be increased with the use of anti-materials, such as a Scroll of Strength and a Jewel of Blessing.
The shields, armor and weapons come with a default Luck value of 40. These items can be augmented with golden ingots or spined leather (depending on the type of material) to increase the value of 40 luck or to boost the Luck of an item up to 140.
Additionally some items, like the Hollow weapon, which is infused with Hollow, can be equipped to boost the damage of any damage-dealing skill by 5%. These items can be purchased in the shop or created by using the appropriate ingredients.
